On the edge of Karlsaue park, a botanical masterpiece lies just waiting to be explored: the "flower island" Siebenbergen.
From 1834 onwards, the court's director of gardens Wilhelm Hentze converted the island Siebenbergen, man-made around 100 years earlier, into a landscaped garden. The passionate plant collector turned the entire island into a work of art with a very diverse flora. Besides a great number of different perennials, spring flowers and exotic shrubs of all sizes grow there – all the way to imposing trees.
From spring until autumn, the island's visitors can look forward to spectacular sights: in the spring, flowers and shrubs create an explosion of colour; the rhododendrons flower from May onwards, and in the autumn, the leaves burst into all shades of beautiful colours. The island provides a habitat for a wide range of different bird species. Hidden corners alternate with far-ranging views all the way up to the Hercules monument.
