An entire region under one roof
The Museum of Hessian History: 300,000 years of (North) Hessian regional and cultural history under one roof. On its three floors, the local history is presented from a wide range of different perspectives – from traces left by the region's first human inhabitants to the Middle Ages, from the times of the landgraves to the present.
After some major alteration works in 2016, the museum offers even more space for discoveries, permanent exhibits and temporary exhibitions. Since then, the building itself has also been shown to advantage. Designed in 1913 by the architect Theodor Fischer, it is a fusion of Art Nouveau and the Neo-Renaissance style. Particularly conspicuous is the tower, which is visible from a long distance away – it is accessible, and climbing it will reward you with views far across the region that is the focus of the exhibition on the floors beneath it.
Guided tours of the tower are offered every half hour on the hour and the half hour. Subject to change.
