Planetarium

Journey through the galaxies

With 54 seats, Kassel's planetarium is the largest in Hesse. Its centrepiece is a state-of-the-art hybrid projection system made by the company Carl Zeiss and installed in 2016: the "Skymaster ZKP 4" star projector and the fulldome projector "Velvet Duo".

Planetariums project images of the stars in the night sky as viewed from various locations on Earth that are as realistic as possible onto a hemispherical dome. In one and the same show, visitors can fly from the northern to the southern hemisphere at the push of a button.

The planetarium's programme is a colourful mix of presentations designed to appeal to all age groups: from journeys to distant galaxies, from the history to astronomy to children's programmes and music shows. Most of the shows are accompanied by a live commentary that establishes a feeling of closeness between the visitors and the projectionists.

The planetarium's technology: the Skymaster and the Velvet Duo

Kassel's planetarium employs state-of-the-art projection technology. At the core of the system is the opto-mechanical projector Zeiss Skymaster ZKP 4. With the aid of fibre-optics, a brilliant star-strewn sky that can easily compete with the night skies over a desert appears on the dome as if by magic: the projector can project images of up to 7,000 stars. Computer-controlled stepper motors copy the winding orbits of the planets – in the past, this was achieved with mechanical drives. Thanks to the digital elements, the projectionists can now project the night skies at any random date in the past or future onto the dome at the push of a button.

The projection system Velvet Duo takes care of all those celestial mysteries that are usually only revealed by telescopes. As the name suggests, it consists of two 180-degree projectors that can project any digital content across the entire dome ("fulldome video").

The whole system is controlled via the software Powerdome; the entire show can therefore either be controlled by a live projectionist or automated. If you want to leave Earth during the planetarium show and go on a trip through the endless universe, the 3D visualisation software Uniview is the tool used for this journey. Without any effort at all, you can travel through our planet system to the most distant galaxies in the universe in the spaceship "Planetarium".
