With 54 seats, Kassel's planetarium is the largest in Hesse. Its centrepiece is a state-of-the-art hybrid projection system made by the company Carl Zeiss and installed in 2016: the "Skymaster ZKP 4" star projector and the fulldome projector "Velvet Duo".
Planetariums project images of the stars in the night sky as viewed from various locations on Earth that are as realistic as possible onto a hemispherical dome. In one and the same show, visitors can fly from the northern to the southern hemisphere at the push of a button.
The planetarium's programme is a colourful mix of presentations designed to appeal to all age groups: from journeys to distant galaxies, from the history to astronomy to children's programmes and music shows. Most of the shows are accompanied by a live commentary that establishes a feeling of closeness between the visitors and the projectionists.
